Collision Theory of Reaction | HSEB Notes of Chemistry Class 12

Chemistry
HSEB Notes on Collision Theory of Reaction
Class : 12

Though Arrhenius equation is applicable under a wide range of circumstances, collision theory, which was developed by Max Trautz and William Lewis in 1916 -18, provides a greater insight into the energetic and mechanistic aspects of reactions. It is based on kinetic theory of gases. According to this theory, the reactant molecules are assumed to be hard spheres and reaction is postulated to occur when molecules collide with each other. The number of collisions per second per unit volume of the reaction mixture is known as collision frequency (Z). Another factor which affects the rate of chemical reactions is activation energy . Factors  afecting  reaction  rates
Several  factors  afect  the  rate  of  a  reaction. It  is  important  to  know  these factors  so  that  reaction  rates  can  be  controlled,  e.g.  to  improve  product  yields and  efciency  in  industrial  processes:

Redox Reagents
In  the  reaction  15.1  above,  the  magnesium  is  being  oxidized  by  the  chlorine, and the chlorine is being reduced by the magnesium.  The magnesium undergoes and  the  chlorine  undergoes  reduction. Therefore  Chlorine  is  the  Oxidizing  agent!  An  oxidizing  agent  causes  the other  species  with  which  it  is  reacting  to  be  oxidized.    In  this  process,   the oxidizing  agent  accepts  electrons  and  thus  becomes  reduced.

What  is  organic  chemistry?
Organic  substances  all  contain  carbon  atoms  and  organic  chemistry  can  therefore  be  thought  of  as  the  chemistry  of  carbon  compounds.    All  organic  compounds also contain hydrogen.  Compounds that contain only C C  and C H bonds  are  also  called  hydrocarbons.   In  addition  to  carbon  and  hydrogen,  organic  compounds  can  also  contain  oxygen,  nitrogen,  sulphur,  phosphorus  and halogen  atoms.  The  main  sources  of  carbon,  and  therefore  organic  compounds, are  fuels  such  as  coal,  petroleum  and  natural  gas.   (NOTE:  If  you're  going  to have  an  essay,  this  fact  could  go  in  the  essay  and  be  left  out  here.)

Le Chatelier's principle
Le Chatelier's Principle helps to predict what a change in temperature, concentration or pressure will have on the position of the equilibrium in a chemical reaction. It states: When the equilibrium of a closed system is disturbed, the equilibrium will shift to cause the opposite e®ect and so cancel the change. In other words the system will try to get back to equilibrium. Concentration: If the concentration of a substance is increased, the equilibrium will shift so that this concentration decreases. Since Kc is ¯xed for a eaction at a particular temperature, if [reactant] were increased then Le Chatelier would want to shift the equilibrium to decrease [reactant].

Students often say, I studied 40 hours for this exam and I still didn't do well. Where did I go wrong? Most instructors hear this complaint every year. In many cases, it is true that the student invested countless hours, only to produce abysmal results. Often, inefficient study habits are to blame. The important question is: why do so many students have difficulty preparing themselves for organic chemistry exams? There are certainly several factors at play here, but perhaps the most dominant factor is a fundamental disconnect between what students learn and the tasks expected of them.
