The Top 10 Engineering Colleges in India
India is home to numerous world-class engineering colleges and universities. At Indian engineering colleges, students can study such fields as mechanical, civil, electrical, chemical, biochemical and computer engineering. Entrance testing for admission to Indian engineering colleges varies from school to school, so it's important to check each school's requirements before applying. Most top schools, however, have a fairlyuniform selection procedure.
Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur
Located 15 km west of the city of Kanpur, the Indian Institute of Technology has only been in operation since the early 1960s. During its short history, however, it has become the foremost engineering college in India, recruiting top faculty members from all over the world.
Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi
Also established in the early 1960s, the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, has a beautiful campus located near well-known historical monuments such as the Lotus Temple. The college is divided into 13 departments, each focused on a specific science or engineering discipline.
Indian Institute of Technology, Madras
The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, was formally established in 1959 and is part of the Institutes of Technology system, as are the Institutes in Delhi and Kanpur. IIT Madras has about 4,500 students and is divided into 15 departments.
Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai
Also part of the IIT system, the Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai, began in 1958. It's located in a northern suburb of Mumbai (Bombay). Each year, IIT Mumbai admits about 880 students for undergraduate programs, 850 students for master's programs and 400 for PhD programs.
Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur
Another branch of the IIT network, the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, has a unique history. The current campus began as the Hijli Detention Camp, where some of India's best-known freedom fighters were held by the British. The undergraduate/graduate student ratio at IIT Kharagpur is roughly 2:1.
Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee
The Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, began in 1847 as the Thomas College of Engineering. It was converted to India's first institute of technology in 1849. The university offers bachelor's degrees in 11 disciplines of engineering and architecture as well as 55 disciplines for graduate students.
Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati
The Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati, is located in the northeastern region of the country. IIT Guwahati is one of the younger IIT schools, being established in 1995. There are currently 11 departments. IIT Guwahati is also home to three PhD centres: Centre for Energy, Centre for the Environment, and Centre for Nanotechnology.
Indian Institute for Information Technology, Allahabad
Established in 1999, the Indian Institute for Information Technology, Allahabad (IIITA) focuses on information technology and related fields. The 100-acre campus in Deoghat, Jhalwa, is designed in the geometric Penrose pattern. IIITA has joined with Russia to develop a Center of Biotechnology, and with the United States to create a Universal Digital Library.
Anna University
Located in Chennai, Anna University was established in 1978. One of its goals is to foster a positive relationship between academia and industry. As it has grown, Anna University has expanded to three campuses which house centers for advanced studies. These include the National Institute of Fashion Technology, Sugar Research Institute, Mechatronics Institute and an Entrepreneurship Development Park.
National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli
The National Institute of Technology (NIT) began in 1964 as a government entity to help increase the industrialization of the region, but gained its autonomy in 1975. NIT offers undergraduate programs in 10 different disciplines. The NIT is totally focused on engineering and is home to 2,000 undergraduates and approximately 1,000 graduate students.
